Well-child visits are important for all children. These visits allow your doctor to prevent, find and treat any problems before they get worse. During these visits, your doctor should perform a complete physical exam and talk to you about growth, development, injury prevention, diet, discipline and sleep problems.
The chart below shows when most children should receive well child visits. If your child has any special problems, was born prematurely or with a low birth weight, or if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s health, your doctor may recommend more frequent visits.
Recommended Well Child Visit Schedule
You should expect your doctor/nurse to do the following at each well child visit:
- Measure height/length
- Measure weight
- Measure baby’s head circumference
- Check to make sure baby is up-to-date on all shots
