Get It Done By Year One

Did you know that babies should see a dentist by their first birthday? It’s important to start the journey to a healthy smile early because cavities can start forming as soon as your baby’s first tooth comes in. Use these tips to help make your baby’s first dentist appointment a good experience for both of you.

Schedule the appointment

  • Schedule your baby’s first dentist appointment after their first tooth appears or by their first birthday—whichever comes first.
  • Pick a time when they’re normally well-rested and cooperative. Avoid naptime appointments.

Before the appointment

  • Complete the required paperwork before the visit, if possible. It may be easier to do this at home than in the dentist’s waiting room with a baby.
  • Talk to your child about the dentist in a positive way. Tell them how lucky they are to see the dentist and explain what will happen during the appointment so they feel prepared.
  • Help them practice opening their mouth at home to get ready for when the dentist counts and checks their teeth.
  • Read books or watch videos about the dentist to help them feel more confident and excited to see the dentist.

Day of the Appointment

  • Feed your baby a light meal and brush their teeth before the appointment.
  • Save snacks until after the visit so there isn’t food on their teeth during the exam.
  • Write down any questions you have for the dentist so you don’t forget to ask.

During the appointment

  • You can hold your baby in your lap if they can’t sit in the chair by themselves.
  • The dentist will look at their mouth and teeth to look for cavities, injuries, or other concerns.
  • Don’t worry if your baby becomes upset during the appointment. The dental team will work with you to help keep them calm and help them have a fun experience.

If your baby is older than  1 year or already has teeth but hasn’t seen the dentist yet, it’s not too late! Schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as you can and help your child get started on the journey to a healthy smile.
