Recently, there has been an increase in the number of babies born with syphilis (congenital syphilis) in Utah. If you’re pregnant, get tested for syphilis to protect your baby.
All pregnant women should be tested for syphilis at the first prenatal visit. Some people who have a higher likelihood of getting syphilis during pregnancy should also be tested again in the third trimester.
Make sure to ask your doctor about your risk and syphilis testing. Keep in mind that you can have syphilis and not know it. The only way to know for sure if you have syphilis is to get tested.
Syphilis can be cured with an antibiotic. If you test positive for syphilis during pregnancy, be sure to get treatment right away. It is important that you are treated at least 30 days before you give birth to protect your baby from syphilis.
